Nicole Richie and Cara Santana match their stylish gym gear as they enjoy a hike together

She might have been trekking across Runyon Canyon Park, but Nicole Richie was not prepared to let her style credentials slip.

The 31-year-old socialite was spotted in the 160-acre park in Los Angeles, dressed in trendy gym gear on Monday.

Nicole was joined by friend and actress Cara Santana, and even her German Shepherd Iro, and spent some quality time together whilst exercising on the excursion.

Nicole and Cara, 28, were kitted out to the max in gym essentials but nevertheless managed to pull the Lycra look off with ease.

The Simple Life star, Nicole, looked as tanned and trim as ever in a white vest top, scrunched on one side and embellished with a black broach, three-quarter length black Nike Lycra pants and running trainers.

She was fresh-faced exposing her glowing skin, but she still kept a pair of sunglasses firmly on whilst her short caramel brown locks were held back with a headband.

Cara looked similarly chic in her ensemble, a white T-shirt, a pair of black Nike Lycra leggings, and Nike running shoes.

She sported a pair of large dark shades and scraped her brunette locks into a messy bun, and made sure she still wore a touch of make-up, some pink lip gloss and blush for the occasion.

Both Cara and Nicole carried their mobile phones and bottle of water in their hands as they happily walked laughing and joking through the park alongside Iro.

Nicole Richie's online series Candidly Nicole debuted a few months ago with a positive reception.

And in a new episode of her AOL show,  the star shows how the 5ft 1in star clearly likes to get involved in all kinds of sport and exercise as she shoots some hoops with NBA star Lazar Hayward.

Nicole is wed to Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden and they have two children, daughter Harlow, five, and son Sparrow, four.

Meanwhile Cara, who is engaged to Jesse Metcalfe, of Desperate Housewives fame, also regularly works out with dancer-turned-actress Julianne Hough.

Cara, who just recently celebrated her 28th birthday has been engaged to Jesse since January 2012, but met each other in 2009.
