Rihanna covers up in brown dress for more sophisticated look while shopping in New York

Famed for her raunchy stage outfits and flesh-flaunting looks, Rihanna cut a more ladylike figure  while browsing the shops in New York on Monday.

The 25-year-old singer looked happy and relaxed as she walked around the city on her own during some well-served time off.

Wearing a brown, smock-style dress, the Barbados-born star's outfit was a world away from her sexy MTV Video Music Awards afterparty look.

Teaming her loose-fitting dress with a chunky silver necklace and black trainers, the R&B singer looked comfy as she strolled through the busy streets.

Carrying her phone and a small handbag, Rihanna blended into the crowd after her late night at the VMA's on Sunday.

After enjoying some retail therapy, she flagged down back a yellow taxi and jumped in to give her feet a rest.

The talented star might have felt like treating herself after some welcome news from the UK's Official Chart.

It was revealed today that the We Found Love singer had the 14th biggest selling single of the year so far with Stay.

This coupled with the fact that Unapologetic is the 16th biggest selling album of 2013, it is safe to say Rihanna is still dominating the charts.

The VMA's are normally any excuse for stars to dress up to the max, but Rihanna was the exception.

The Unapologetic singer skipped the glitzy red carpet and headed straight to her seat next to galpal Melissa Forde for the prestigious event.

Ri-Ri sported a jet black mullet hairstyle with a cut-off shirt featuring female emcee MC Lyte's face and the lyrics 'Gotta Get A Ruff Neck'.

To complete her look she wore dark blue cuffed jeans with some black strappy heels and a crucifix strategically placed between her front teeth on a night when various mouth grills were all the rage.
